The Farsan-class light cruiser (Gaennai: gruujar jiiyatirmaai /ˌdɑmˈmiɽ taʊifʔin/; Gj) is the long-range workhorse of the Unified Gaennid Navy. Developed by Imaran Starwrights Corporation, the Farsan was the Empire’s answer to regional unrest after the horrors of the Culling. Fast, powerful, and the first class of ship to bear the then-newly found kassem-alloy plating, the Farsan is far more at home alone on long-reaching patrols and are commanded only by the most trusted and independent shipmasters throughout all of the Household Navies.

The Farsan is named after the Kel-Ad’in city Farsan, one of the hundred cities destroyed in the initial House Amaat missile strikes that began the Culling and the end of the War of Sorrows.

Development History

In the years following the Culling and the end of the War of Sorrows, old blood feuds among the Bissim Sa stars started to reach a boiling point. Without a common enemy to fight, the smaller houses and the stronger clans engaged in small skirmishes at household borders planet side and in stellar battlezones. in with weapon-modified civilian and Strife-aged decommissioned military vessels and vehicles. Despite the Naamid houses coming together to make ships at war-time production to replenish their numbers, the budding Barasani Dynasty had no vessels large or fast enough to respond to these small tribal conflicts.

Imaran Starwrights Corporation, owned by the Imaran tribe of House Sydenna, initially proposed the Farsan along side two other shipwright companies. None of the ships presented met the Imperial Navy’s expectations, but the Farsan was chosen with a stipulation: it needed to be faster. To do that, though, the armored needed to be lighter.

Around the same time, the Kassem tribe of House Hosiim (a distant-but-closely allied clan to the Imarani), discovered the kassem-alloy plate. It was the key to the Fasan‘s development.

Designated GRUJ-3337, the 1,098,874 tonne Farsan skirted the line between destroyers and cruisers, and was larger than any destroyer developed by the Gaennai since the beginning of the Empire. With tribe Kassem’s help, GRUJ-3337 met the Imperial Navy’s need for a powerful axial and turreted particle lasers, and modular missile batteries with large magazines, strong plated armor, and a hold-space more than large enough for a modified mechanized infantry company. It was a vessel that would be more than capable of committing to long-range patrols while shrugging off fire from angry clansmen and pirates.

Amiral Urumaan Jer’eth khyyth Barasan, sitting commander of the Imperial Navy Shipbuilding Authority, approved of the finalized designs on 3337.093 and awarded the funds necessary to create the Fasan-class fleet destroyer.

It wasn’t until well into the ship’s testing phase that consideration was given to the Farsan‘s light assortments of offensive weaponry in the face of its mission. The Farsan provided a disappointing destructive output during firing exercises. Unintereseted in scrapping a project so expensive and long in the making, Amiral Urumaan Jer’eth khyyth Barasan reclassified the Farsan into a light cruiser, allowing Imaran khyyth to fit a weapons pod beneath the main hull to meet the Amiral‘s expectations.

Design

The 3330’s proved to be a difficult period for the new Barasani dynasty. To respond to wide-spread unrest, the Farsan was built around its propulsion systems rather than its axial weapon. Imaran Starwrights met that demand by installing a state-of-the-art MAG drive and with an impressive array of fusion engines, giving the Farsan exactly what it needs to make quick work of long distances.

The Farsan‘s primary role as a light cruiser was to conduct independent long-range patrols. It’s independence hinged on the kassem-alloy plating, which allowed the ship designers to stay within weight limitations without sacrificing protection.

Taking inspiration from the Isharans, Gaennai ship builders focus on small forward profiles, high speeds, and strike power while deviating in length to allow for more weapon systems to face off other nations’ ships on equal footing. A way to ensure that the Farsan would be capable of handling more than a few targets at a time, missile racks were designed as out-and-around launch systems reminiscent of 21st Century naval vertical launching systems.

That decision, however, meant that the light cruiser would also suffer slower speeds than those of their interstellar cousins, the Isharans. Still, Imaran khyyth ship designers made certain to fit the Farsan with an impressive electronic warfare suite and capable electronic countermeasures which allowed the warship an unforeseen but welcome secondary role as a hunter-killer destroyer.

Including its impressive armament, the Farsan was expected to ferry a Unified Army modified mechanized infantry company to hotspots throughout the Empire. As the Farsan was unable to attain atmospheric flight given its design, its small craft capacities allowed a wide range of crafts to be attached to any given command. The Farsan‘s first aerospace detachment (which dictated the standard for following Farsan destroyers) was two gunship-tonnage craft, two heavy dropships, and two personnel shuttles. Should deploying via dropship be too slow for a given operation, the Farsan is fitted with drop pod bays for aggressive deployment evolutions.

Operational History

The S.Bs’s.aGn Farsan (Gj-Bs’s.aGn-01) entered into the Imperial fleet as it sailed out of the Canna Qhr Orbital Shipyards on 3341.155. Workups and other short-duration training deployments greatly impressed the Naamid clans and surprised nations within the Peripherian region. Its speed, firepower, and mission versatility quickly set the Farsan apart from other destroyer classes. As word of the light cruiser’s capabilities spread throughout the Empire, the number interstellar and terrestrial border hostilities fell dramatically.

To date, only one Farsan-class light cruiser has entered in fleet action: the S.Bs.aJs Kennavare (Gj-Bs.aJs-19), during the 3417 Verge Colonization Expedition.
