So I noticed recently that Josh added some fighters to his People’s Coalition Corvette, does this mean that Carrier Warfare is back on the Menu for COM? If So will we see the same type of Military force division as is current in the World with carriers being more numerous than the non-existence of battleships for nations naval forces. Also to consider if fighter carriers are numerous is a navy turning cargo carriers into “Cheap” fighter carriers in times of War?
So fighters won’t quite be the game changer we saw in WWII that drove the evolution of the modern capital ship today. Simply put, fighters in CoM don’t pack the punch to destroy a capital ship like a modern fighter or WWII bomber did. While fantastic surgical weapons capable of damaging subsystems of capital ships like battleships or dreadnoughts, they are limited by the power of the weapons which they can carry on board. Fighters are far more useful at dealing with frigates, destroyers, etc. As such, carriers will decidedly not be more numerous than conventional capital ships (battleships, etc.) and are often more of a support ship. Cheap carrier made from civilian ships are possible, but remember that civilian ships are slower and not as survivable as their military counterparts.
Thanks, Josheua. With this information, I guess that most navies will elect for a Battlestar type ship, a battleship that removes some of its long range weapons for carrying some fighters for escort duties. Is that sought of the right heading?
To an extent. A modern battlecruiser or battleship would have a pretty healthy fighter compliment. I don’t like to think of it quite like a battlestar but more in relation to star wars ships. Such as how ISDs or Mon Calamari ships carried fighters. Or how ships in Halo carried fighters. So while the role is still “Cruiser” or “battleship” they might carry fighters to support themselves. Dedicated carriers would give fighter support for a whole task force.
