The Great Ionian War (3336 CE – 3345 CE), also known as the Great War or the Ionian War, was a large scale extra-solar conflict that engulfed much of Ionia. It was the most wide spread and destructive conflict in Ionian history and pitted the regions three largest powers against each other; the Ionian League, the Dominion of Pagathar and the Kingdom of Ithaseia, and directly involved more than 13 billion people across over 29 star systems. The war was the climax of the Ionian Wars period, which lasted from 3312 CE to the end of the Great Ionian War in 3345 CE.

Beginning with the Sieges of Phonecia and the Halassan Offensive, the war began with an effective Pagatharan and Ithasian blitzkrieg deep into the Ionian held territory. By the close of the fourth year, the Dominion of Pagathar and Kingdom of Ithasiea has scored a number of crucial victories in the Halassan Expanse and Ionia Caldera, occupying a number of worlds and scattering much of the Ionian League’s military assets to the furthest fringes of its territory. These significant victories in the first four years of the war culminated in the Siege of Foslara in 3340, a major strike at the capital of the Ionian League by the Dominion of Pagathar, under the command of Telegonus Anasto. After the defeat of Anasto’s forces on Foslara however, the Ionian League gained traction when it mobilized its greater industrial base, and formerly established a unified, centralized military. Using superior numbers, the Ionian League drove the Pagatharans back to their heartland in the southern Ionian Caldera, and engaged them in a series of attritional campaigns over the course of the last five years.

In a state of total war, the major participants threw their entire economic, industrial, and scientific capabilities behind the war effort, blurring the distinction between civilian and military resources. The Great Ionian War was the deadliest conflict in Ionian history, marked by over 3 billion fatalities, most of which were civilians. It included massacres, genocides, strategic bombing and premeditated death from starvation and disease. It was also one of the most pivotal in Ionian history, recognised by the larger educated community of Ionia and beyond as being the catalyst for the Ionian League's consolidation, success and unbridled growth over the next century.
