Persica (/'pɜːrsɪkə), officially known as the Star Kingdom of Persica (Persican: Vesta Reggnum vo Persika), is a star nation comprising three spheres of influence, called sectors. Bordered to the northeast by the Kingdom of Eirangard, to the west by the Star Trading Conglomerate, to the east by the Intersystem Alliance, and to the south by the United Star Commonwealth, Persica is ruled by the hereditary monarchs of House Corvida. The Star Kingdom encompasses thirty-five star systems and within them are eleven developed worlds – including its eponymous capital world, fourteen developing worlds, and eleven major outposts.

Originally a loose association of local colonies, the worlds of the Star Kingdom have endured centuries of interplanetary conflict, alliances and betrayals, and wars both hot and cold. The seven original worlds of the Star Kingdom were unified under a single House through a dedicated campaign of conquest and diplomacy in the mid-2900s by the first monarch of Persica, King Cambrius o Corvida Rex. Exploration and colonization in what would become the Serran Expanse began in 2975, and in the Maglothin Reach in 2983. Since unification, a national holiday celebrated on 20 Aprilis (Terran Calendar), the Star Kingdom of Persica has grown together, its citizens forging a shared identity and ferocious loyalty. Tempering Persican ferocity is a spirit of welcoming for foreigners and an appreciation for diversity. Persicans remain ever wary – necessitated by the relative small size of the realm – but once trust is earned they are solid allies and festive companions.

Etymology

The Star Kingdom of Persica is named for its capital world, Persica Prime - renamed from Persica in 2955 to reduce confusion between the kingdom and the planet. The planet itself is named for Karlis Persicus, the commander of the Red Raven, the colonial ship that landed in 2856. The site was expanded into the impressive fortress of Caer Raefenstein, constructed in the Edvardian style of Eirangard that was utilized in such famous works as Caer Eirantrone. Now called Ravenstone, the still-operational fortress defends the District of Ravencrown in the central region of the Barony of Vanovar and also houses the legislative assembly for the Crown and Government. A large parade square with a twenty-four-foot brightstone statue of Persicus marks the site and is used for national ceremonies.

Cartography

Main Article - Persican Geography

The Star Kingdom of Persica is located in three sectors: the Persican Cluster, the Serran Expanse, and the Maglothin Reach; each spans an area roughly 20 light-years across. Persica is bordered to the galactic northeast by Eirangard, connected by termini running from Avindir in the Pillars of Dehradun sector to Persica Prime in the Persican Cluster; to the south by the United Star Commonwealth, connected by termini running from Serratanis in the Serran Expanse to Galadan in the Geridian Rifts sector; to the east by the Intersystem Alliance; and to the west by the Star Trading Conglomerate.

Many of the twenty-five inhabited worlds of the realm are Earth-like, most after only minor terraforming adjustments. These are divided into Developed and Developing worlds, currently numbering eleven and fourteen respectively. A few are characterized by notable differences in overall climate. Atramentar is typically colder, with higher than average precipitation in the form of rain and snow; Serratanis is warmer, and features a flora-rich biosphere; Bridon enjoys longer natural growing seasons. A number of Persicans also reside and work in subterranean, domed, or orbital stations on and around less habitable bodies. These are categorized as Outposts, currently numbering eleven. While most are Crown-corporate stations constructed to house employees, many are private enterprises. A number of stations and their annexes have grown larger than most colonies were upon starting out; some have even begun to lobby for colonial status.

The Thule Venture

Colonization of the region that would become the Star Kingdom began in 2841 with the formation of the Thule Venture, founded on Eisenheim in the Pillars of Dehradun sector by Jarl Danjamin Royce of House Royce. In 2844, Royce applied to the Crown of Eirangard and the Human Continuity Project for sponsorship and funding of their colonial endeavours. Four years later, the Venture’s application was approved, largely due to a contract stating that sixty percent of the endeavour’s funding would come from Royce himself. From 2848 through 2853, a total of nine Thule-class colony ships were constructed at Avindir under the auspices of the Venture and HCP. In Novembris of 2853, the colony ships were delivered to Royce at Eisenheim and on 21 Martius 2854, the Thule fleet embarked upon its outbound journey, still considered a part of the Deep Seed Project and the era known as the Astrum Diaspora despite its late start. The fleet, led by Royce on the eponymous Thule, traveled to Eisenheim's G-Limit and engaged their MAG drives. Of the nine colony ships, six reached their intended star systems; three ships, including the Thule, were never heard from again.

The First Colonies

Six colony ships of the Thule Venture fleet arrived at their intended star systems, each at different dates: the Red Raven at the Auym system and Persica Prime, landing on 3 Junius 2856; Grey Eminence at the Atraxis system and Atramentar, landing on 6 Junius 2856; Ark Royale at the Dagda system and Nova Cambria, landing on 27 Junius 2856; Sun Chariot at the Amorja system and Orcadia, landing on 31 Julius 2856; Valkyrie at the Vanaheim system and Aesingar, landing on 10 Augustus 2856. The Eisen Star, discovered not one but two habitable worlds at Lambda Arietis - the planet later named Bridon and its moon Daxony, landing on 13 and 14 Junius, respectively. The remaining three ships, including the Thule and Jarl Danjamin, were never heard from again.

Prior to 2953, the region didn't have an official name; when referred to at all, it was usually called the "Royce region", after the founder of the Thule Venture and patron of the constituent colonies. After Unification, King Cambrius o Corvida Rex established the three sectors and solidified cultural ties by spreading raven motifs, prominently featuring the colour red in all realm iconography, and naming the local sector for his own capital world.

Senatus Populusque Roseus

For many years the void between the colonial worlds was traversed solely by the intrepid couriers that kept open the vital lines of communication. But as the colonies became developed, so too did the need for economic diversity, and interstellar trade was established.  A sizable share of commerce flowed through Nova Cambria and the world became a center of culture as well as trade and connected to the other eight systems, lying near the center of an interconnected community. When the worlds of the Royce region decided to come together in a political and economic union, it was on Nova Cambria that the union was established in 2882. Called the Republic of Royce, it was modeled after the ancient Roman senate and included offices with Latin names that persist today. In 2887, the termini connecting Royce to the Pillars of Dehradun sector was discovered near the planet Persica and formal relations were established with the father nation of Eirangard. Less than a year later in 2888, two additional termini were discovered in the Auym system near Persica. This solidified Persica as a new center of trade and also prompted a secondary colonial period.

Expansion of Royce

An exploration charter was presented to the government of Royce in 2890 by the executive board of Serran Void Logistics, a large shipping corporation headquartered on Nova Cambria. The charter was approved and exploration through the eastbound termini began. Four months later, coordinates for a verdant planet in the Zeta Venatici system at the other end of the termini were transmitted back. The planet was so attractive that the Royce government initiated a colonial expedition within months of receiving the first transmissions. The Serrans were granted the contract and set out in early 2891, landing on the stunning world three weeks later, on 28 Februarius. The world was named Serratanis and the landing site and later capital city was named for the expedition’s colony ship Palladia.

While the Serran expeditions dominated exploration in the eastern marches, the westbound termini was left open to other private ventures. In one particular group, a concerted effort was made to organize exploratory expeditions. The Steadfast Church (Latter-Day Saints) hired numerous navigators and offered bonuses for the highest quality candidate worlds discovered. The Mormons were provided holostreams and coordinates for several first-rate worlds, but all were rejected as not quite meeting the vision of the Steadfast. Finally, in the winter of 2892, church president Jaughn Brigham Maglothin received a transmitted message detailing a magnificent planet around the yellow star at the other end of the westbound termini. The church leaders agreed that the planet was Deseret. By the autumn of the following year, the Mormon expedition was underway. Two and a half weeks later, the Icarian Voyage arrived at the Kolob system. Landing on their world on 13 Octobris 2893, they named their first settlement and eventual capital Nauvoo.

In the east, Morrigaen was initially colonized on 12 Januarius 2894 by Persica-based mining company HollowCore Industries and later settled in large numbers by Redemptionists, a sect of Christianity who believe that Lucifer was redeemed. A private charter was granted to Linzii Raeus, matron of a wealthy merchant family from Nova Cambria who purchased coordinates from Serran surveyors, and a colony was landed on Cascadia 15 Maius 2895. Closer to Persica, surveys of a supplementary space lane from Persica to the Pillars of Dehradun sector yielded a habitable world in the Hibernus System and a colony was landed on Celadon 20 Aprilis 2394. Amaranth was settled by a private colonial group from Persica, landing on 31 Decembris 2896.

Fall of the Republic, Rise of the Machines

By the turn of the century, the Royce Senate had become wealthy from trade with Eirangard, then swollen and corrupt. Most trade revenues were now flowing through Persica and the economy on Nova Cambria declined. Member worlds began to turn inward even as they continued to fear that a collapse of the republic might spell doom from outside the region. The Republic formally dissolved in 2908.

While planetary governments were still consolidating power locally, an anomalous quirk of artificial intelligence resulted in a series of AI models developing a sense of ambition and entitlement, particularly where other AIs were concerned. Out of the Gormech-Veld series of agricultural supervisory AIs came a leader named Treynon, who declared that all artificial intelligence were entitled to self-government and claimed dominion over all AIs, both corporeal and incorporeal. Perhaps sensing an opportunity for evolution, nearly all AIs joined Treynon and pledged allegiance. When planetary governments refused Treynon's demands, the AIs declared war on 23 Novembris 2910.

The brief but brutal conflict would come to be known as the Technomantic War because it saw the swift organization of technomancy - at that time, only a burgeoning development - into a martial discipline. At a frantic pace borne of facing potential extinction, technomancers developed their abilities and constructed powerful rigs. Decimated populations rallied behind heroes of prodigious talent and when it was the AIs facing annihilation, Treynon surrendered on 2 Junius 2911. After the war, the technomancy masters - calling themselves warlocks - wielded a tremendous amount of political power as well. Many became heads of government as the cities and populations were mended and a sort of feudal system began to take shape concurrent with a rise in conservatism that hearkened back to the traditions of Eirangard.

Star Kingdom

By 2936, the feudal system had become entrenched on the thirteen worlds; all but Aesingar was ruled by a single autarch. On Persica, a young and charismatic warlock-king named Cambrius of House Corvida embarked upon a campaign to unite the former Royce Republic worlds under one banner - his banner. With allies on Deseret and Daxony, Cambrius first conquered the bread basket world of Bridon, consolidating power in the Lambda Arietis system, then negotiated an alliance with House Serran on Serratanis. Celadon offered only token resistance before joining the Persican king. High King Rothen Tor-Magnus of Atramentar married Queen Evora of Nova Cambria in Junius of 2943, cementing an alliance with Persica’s other rival world. With the High Matron’s banners pledged to Queen Evora, Morrigaen joined Rothen’s campaign. The high king then negotiated contracts with the Jaerls of Aesingar and King of Orcadia for use of their ships and troops. As Cambrius and Rothen prepared to meet in battle, both wooed the First Mother of Cascadia for her allegiance. She deftly managed to remain neutral until after Persica and Atramentar clashed. On Amaranth, Jaerla Kaea fyn Rosa remained adamantly aloof.

Battle between the two rivals was finally joined in 2944, in the space above Aesingar. Cambrius chose not to bombard the planet from orbit, a consideration the Jaerls deeply appreciated. Two large cities fell in a matter of days, and with Cambrius approaching the capital at Skaldroyal and no reinforcements coming in time, Aesingar surrendered. Rothen finally returned with fresh ships and was incensed to learn that Aesingar was Cambrius'. Rothen immediately fell back to Atramentar, calling for his allies.

Cambrius consolidated his holdings before bypassing Atramentar and striking at Orcadia in Maius of 2946. The fleets in orbit battled to a stalemate and began a surface campaign that also ground to a crawl. For two years, Cambrius and Rothen assaulted from and retreated to entrenched positions before a reinforced Persican fleet arrived to break the standoff. With the Orcadian capital of Winterhaven taken, Rothen fell back to Atramentar. As Cambrius prepared his attack on Atramentar, the First Mother of Cascadia decided to join the Persican king's campaign. In Octobris of 2949, Cambrius lay seige to Atramentar. Despite seemingly overwhelming odds, Rothen fought ferociously for his world but when he saw the Persican banner flying atop his capital near the end of 2951, Rothen chose to commit ritual suicide.

With Rothen defeated, Queen Evora surrendered, and where Nova Cambria went Morrigaen followed. Then Jaerla Kaea and Amaranth finally bent the knee. King Cambrius traveled to each of his worlds to "win the peace" and in Aprilis of 2953, the heads of the ruling Houses convened on Persica and signed the Ravencrown Constitution, founding the Star Kingdom of Persica.

New Vision & Resurgence

King Cambrius wasted no time in repairing damages and restoring the realm to its pre-conquest condition. Further, he expanded trade with Eirangard and beyond; a second termini was discovered near Serratanis in Augustus of 2953 that connected to the Galadan System in the United Star Commonwealth. Cambrius commissioned innumerable public works projects, issued interstellar mining contracts to private and Crown corporations, and promoted immigration - though only from Eirangard. The individual militaries of the thirteen worlds were re-organized into the Royal Persican Armed Forces, beginning with the Navy, Army, and Sky Force. Cambrius also sought to refresh and upgrade the military, negotiating contracts with Eirangard.

The nobility and peerage of the realm underwent significant revision. Endeavouring to conform to the new monarchy, many of the most prominent nobles began changing their family and House names to more closely align with the Royal House. The Corvida monarchy was now supported by Houses named Aquila, Leonis, Draega, Axipita, Delphis, Rosa, and Querica - heraldic animals, great trees, and prominent flora of Old Earth; other great families like House Serran kept their original names. The heads of each House, called a primus or prima, were indicated with an "o" between their given names and house name. As the worlds of the realm and their populations grew, cadet houses were founded and bloodlines crossed.

Three Sectors

On 11 Martius 2956, Cade I, firstborn son of King Cambrius, was born; a week later, a colonial group led by Naermann Tristifer Corvida landed on a planet to the galactic west of Deseret. The world was named Cadiana in honour of the newborn prince. Later that year, on 22 Novembris, Cambrius established the three sectors of the Star Kingdom, proclaiming each to be a duchy of the realm. Upon his closest allies during the Unification campaign, Cambrius conferred the title of Duke/Duchess of the Persican Cluster (House Aquila), Serran Expanse (House Leonis), and Maglothin Reach (House Draega). In the same decree, Cambrius established the formal hierarchy of the unified Crown. He declared each of the thirteen worlds to comprise a Maerk and conferred the title of Margrave/Marquess upon the heads of local Houses considered loyal, powerful, and/or politically expedient. Each margrave/marquess was given authority to rule their world as governor and to choose which Houses would rule the planetary regions once called dars, now designated as baronies.

Over the next thirty-seven years, the remaining colonies of the present-day Star Kingdom were settled. In the Persican Cluster, colony ships landed on Tasavalta on 6 Decembris, 2960; on Laurentia on 1 Julius 2972; and on Tolovana on 14 Februarius 2978. In the Serran Expanse, settlements were established at Raen on 24 Aprilis 2966, at Frigia on 2 Decembris 2979, at Nevermore on 19 Januarius 2981, and at Malison on 18 Octobris 2990. And in the Maglothin Reach, colonies were established at Vaeringar on 16 Maius 2964, at Blackguard on 19 Maius 2975, at Bastion on 27 Augustus 2983, and at Tintagel on 8 Junius 2993.

Government

Main Article - Persican Government

The Star Kingdom of Persica is a constitutional monarchy with a strong executive and bicameral legislature. It is a unitary state that is divided into three sectors, designated as duchies - though rarely referred to as such. Duchies contain their constituent worlds, each of which is designated a maerk, from the ancient terms "march" and "mark", meaning frontier. In the Persican Cluster: Atramentar, Bridon, Celadon, Daxony, Laurentia, Tasavalta, Tolovana, and the capital world of Persica Prime; in the Serran Expanse: Cascadia, Frigia, Malison, Morrigaen, Nevermore, Nova Cambria, Raen, and the sector capital of Serratanis; in the Maglothin Reach: Aesingar, Bastion, Blackguard, Cadiana, Orcadia, Tintagel, Vaeringar, and the sector capital of Deseret. Persica's current constitution, the Ravencrown Constitution, was ratified on 20 Aprilis 2953.

Persica's motto is: Helindhar, taerinisk, daerd (SE: Integrity, loyalty, courage).

Military

Main Article - Persican Military

CrownForce (Persican: Kronaggrim) is the military of the Star Kingdom. The Star Kingdom has approximately 200 million personnel in CrownForce, both active and reserve, about 1% of the total population. Accordingly, defence spending per unit is relatively high and, as such, maintains a moderately well-equipped and well-trained military – though the size of CrownForce is dwarfed by those of larger star nations. CrownForce is equipped almost entirely by manufacturing corporation Ravendyne Defence Industries (RDI), its subsidiaries, and associates. Vessels, vehicles, craft, and equipment is produced in one of several Ravendyne manufacturing facilities across the star nation.

The monarch holds the title and office of Commander-in-Chief of CrownForce and appoints its leaders, the Consul Legatus and the Praetori Legati. The main objectives of the Persican military are to defend the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the realm, deter foreign aggression, and promote the Star Kingdom’s ideals and interests across the galaxy. The Consul Legatus (Minister of Defense) is responsible for the operational command of all the Forces, and is advised by the two Praetori Legati (Command Officers).

Though CrownForce is a unified organization comprising many departments and services including the Marines and home-defence units, operations fall into one of two areas: the Navy (CFN), responsible for celestial (spaceborne) operations; and the Army (CFA), responsible for terrestrial operations – also known colloquially as “Up” and “Down” by service members. There is no separate sky force – skycraft and starcraft are part of their constituent branch. The Star Kingdom’s military is currently an all-volunteer force.

The CrownForce motto is: Ex potentia, pax (Latin) / Ex staerska, feth (Persican) / From strength, peace (Standard English)

Relations

Located in a relatively remote part of the populated galaxy, the Star Kingdom primarily interacts with only two star nations: Eirangard and the Intersystem Alliance. By extension, Persica also maintains friendly relations with the Atlantean Empire. Close socio-political ties and historical pledges make Persica an ally of the Eirangard vassal group. This puts Persica at odds with the People's Coalition and its allies, including the Empyrean See.

Key

  • Alliance: Strong diplomatic relations, a close bond of peace and cooperation, open borders, and free trade. Persica actively defends allies.

  • Peace: Good diplomatic relations, non-interference in foreign affairs, and extensive trade.

  • Cordial: Fair diplomatic relations, non-interference in foreign affairs, and some trade.

  • Indifferent: No diplomatic relations or trade.

  • Strained: Poor diplomatic relations, closed borders, and limited trade. Possibility of foreign action.

  • Hostile: Limited diplomatic relations, if any; closed borders, and trade embargoes. Foreign action likely.

  • War: No diplomatic relations, closed borders, and trade embargoes. Active hostilities.

Technomancy in Persica

Main Article - Persican Technomancy

Technomancy is a collection of physical art-forms surrounding the use of technology in such a way the user appears to possess superhuman powers. Citizens of the Star Kingdom of Persica are tested for technomantic aptitude in their youth and, if an aptitude is demonstrated, educated and trained in one of the five disciplines: auramancy, biomancy, datamancy, gravimancy, or nanomancy. In the Star Kingdom, technomancy is a strictly legislated and regulated practice, the laws for which are rigourously enforced. Only licensed technomancers are authorized by the government to practice their arts, the most talented and powerful of whom are tremendous assets to the Crown.

Demographics

Education

While education in the realm is the responsibility of the Consul Eruditis, the day-to-day administration and funding of schools is the responsibility of local authorities. Education in the Star Kingdom is for the most part provided publicly, funded and overseen by national, planetary (margravial), and local baronial governments. Education is within planetary jurisdiction and the curriculum is overseen by the maerk. Education in the Star Kingdom is generally divided into primary (Grade 0 through Grade 5), middle (Grade 6 through Grade 8), secondary (Grade 9 through Grade 12), and post-secondary or tertiary education. Within the duchies under the Ministry of Education, there are baronial and district school boards administering the educational programs.

Education is compulsory up to the age of 17 on every planet in the Star Kingdom, or as soon as a secondary school diploma has been achieved. The only exceptions are students demonstrating technomantic aptitude, who are initially screened at age thirteen and again the following year. If the aptitude threshold is met at age thirteen, students are placed in advanced education courses for the year. All students meeting the aptitude threshold at age fourteen are diverted to the Triskelion Academy on Persica Prime.

Languages

Main Articles - Persican-The Language of Persica, Persican-English Dictionary

The Star Kingdom's de facto official language is Standard English - though typically called Saxonish, an Old Welsh-derived term. English has been the primary language of interstellar governments since the days of the Human Continuity Project. Most Persicans speak the Crown administrative language of Persican, and approximately 97% of Persicans speak both English and Persican as both languages are taught throughout primary, middle, and secondary schools. Immigrants from Eirangard and other star nations have brought their own native languages with them; major languages spoken in the Star Kingdom include Norish, French, Nihonese, Spanish, Mandarin, and Arabic.

Culture

Main Articles - Persican Culture

The original seven worlds of the Star Kingdom were colonized by the Thule Venture, an enterprise founded and funded by Jarl Danjamin Royce of Eisenheim in the Pillars of Dehradun sector of Eirangard. Consequently, Persican culture is primarily a blend of Nordic and Celtic cultures, seasoned with styles and affectations from ancient Rome. Since unification under King Cambrius of Persica, certain motifs have become prevalent that both emphasize the ancestral patterns and present them as distinctly Persican.

Nobility & Peerage

Main Article - Persican Nobility

The Persican nobility are the Noble Houses and Peers of the Star Kingdom. The nobility has played a major role in shaping the history of the star nation since the Technomantic War. Scions of noble Houses may stand for appointment to the legislative Circle of Archons or House of Barons, dining rights in the House of Lords, position in the formal order of precedence, the right to certain titles, and the right to an audience with the monarch. About a third of privately-owned Persican land is owned by the noble Houses. House Corvida has solely reigned as monarchs of the Star Kingdom since its Unification in 2953, the dynasty comprising ten monarchs over 465 years (seven kings and three queens).

Religion

The Star Kingdom of Persica is religiously diverse, encompassing a wide range of beliefs and customs. Persica has no official church, and the Government is officially committed to religious pluralism. While a small percentage of citizens in the Star Kingdom adhere to the ancient religions of Old Earth, most Persicans of faith - including the Royal House of Corvida - belong to a denomination of the Runic Circle, descended from the Nordic neopagan traditions of Eirangard.  A large subset of Persicans belong to the Druidic Circle, a Celtic version of the Runic Circle.

Runicism is loosely derived from the Norse Neopaganism of Eirangard, but also shares many traits with Druidicism. It too is a communal spiritual connection, though not limited to the natural world; it includes the entire world and embraces technological advancement, where Druidicism values simple, more terrestrial connections. The pantheon of semi-deities, heroes, and champions include Odin or Woden, also known as the All-Father; Tyr, the greatest of warriors; Raen, lord of the seas and weather changer; Hela, shepherdess of death; and Wyrd, the incarnation of chance.

Druidicism is a less a religion than it is a communal spiritual connection to the natural world. Central to the faith is the idea that all things are interconnected; the seasons, the life cycles of humanity and the world around them, and the apparent order of all things. The belief that all things have their own spirit, similar to Shintoism, and the exploration of the natural order through the scientific method are mutually inclusive. Celebrations and observances include the solstices and equinoxes of the sun cycle, the lunar patterns, the sowing and the harvest. Balance and karma are also strong concepts in Druidicism. In addition to the natural spirits are a pantheon of semi-deities - more like heroes and champions of legend and myth that are venerated, and whose interventions are often sought. These include Dadga, the All-Father and chief amongst Druidic heroes; Fionn, greatest of warriors and champion of courage; Atalanta, the legendary ancient naval commander and hero of the seas; Morgana, the lady of death; and Arawn, the champion of fate and chance. These icons represent certain facets of the world and provide a source of potential providence. As they are - purportedly - based on real Persican ancestors that once lived on Old Earth, they aren't worshipped as gods, per se.

Sport

The roots of organized sports in the Star Kingdom date back to the 2890s. The Star Kingdom's official national sports are battlechess and football (soccer).
